Spotlight Work
Overview
This concept project is a scenario-based learning experience designed and developed to help managers lead an effective 1-on-1 and provide constructive feedback.
Audience: Managers who are responsible for supervising employees
Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Visual Design
Tools Used: Figma, Photoshop
A large company noticed that several managers were not leading effective 1:1 meetings. Their meetings were too casual and often avoided addressing conflict. Meetings also lacked direct feedback which led to employee confusion or employees believing their current work was strong. As a result, the leader reached out to me to help support.
By conducting a needs analysis, I confirmed that we could solve this issue with a scenario-based learning experience. This learning simulation will put managers in a realistic simulation of the 1:1 process.
Process
I used the design thinking process to come up with solutions that are nonlinear in order to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions. While this specific design challenge has a defined problem, tackling the scope of the users’ needs from a wide angle allows me to solve for any deeper uncovered pain points.
I designed and developed this project by following the steps below:
Creating the action map
Writing the text-based storyboard
Designing the visual mockups
Developing the interactive prototype
Finalizing and publishing the project
Each section played an important role in developing the learning experience to improve every manager's effectiveness in 1:1 meetings.
Action Map
Through data analysis, feedback and observations, I developed an action map to determine the overall goal for the learning experience. I identified specific tasks and actions that a manager should take to lead a productive and efficient 1:1 meeting.
Since the project is focused on mangers building their skillset to lead effective 1:1 meetings, I came up with clear, observable actions and phrases that we could keep track of. I chose four specific growth areas and designed questions and scenarios to match those domains.
Text-Based Story
Once I had my action map complete, I created the outline for the learning experience. I fully fleshed out the scenarios that would drive the key takeaways leading to effective managers.
I enjoyed creating the text-based story because I was able to design and edit each part in order to make sure the learning was clear and an enjoyable experience.
Visual Mockup
One of my favorite parts of the process was using Figma to create the learning experience. I played with different colors and backgrounds to make the experience visually pleasing while also engaging. It took several iterations to end at the final product, and I am proud of it. The colors, typography and alignment are all visually sound.
Results and Takeaways
The fully developed learning experience was well received and led to increased morale and complete action steps coming out of 1:1 meetings. Many noted how the concise text and intentional colors aided their learning.
I learned a lot through the design and development of this learning experience. It was my first time fully executing a scenario-based learning experience and am proud of the outcome.
Given the chance, I’d revise the project to include a data tracker to inform me about the user’s answers. This data could help me make another version with more nuanced situations to increase the effectiveness in 1:1 meetings.
